San Diego is the perfect location for plein air artists.
Monthly Saturday morning paintouts draw large crowds to see one of our artists demonstrate.
More than 60 times a year, SDWS artists gather to paint San Diego scenes.
San Diego's ideal climate and abundant scenery make it a "paintout" paradise. For decades, artists from The San Diego Watercolor Society have been recording their unique visions of this Southern California landscape. The monthly Saturday paintouts feature a demonstration while the weekly Wednesday paintouts are informal gatherings.
9:00am - 12:30pm Kate Sessions Memorial Park We have a newer member of SDWS as our demonstrator. Shuang Li was born and raised in China. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art History and Art Theory in China and was an art professor at Tsinghua University in Bejing before moving to the United States. She then received her M.F.A. from the University of Oregon, one of the largest and most unique art departments in the Northwest. As an artist, Shuang has explored a variety of mediums, such as gouache, watercolor, colored pencils, and mixed media, but has now focused on transparent watercolor. She has worked with well-known instructor Tony Couch, and now uses landscape as her primary subject to explore color, lights, and texture, clearly demonstrating the influence of John Singer Sargent and the design principles of Edgar Whitney. Through the years, she has been actively involved with many art and design projects in the Northwest and Silicon Valley, eventually owning and operating her own illustration and design studio, Image Online. Her resume is far more complete thanthis, but space is limited. Shuang will be demonstrating using two different techniques, watercolor and ink/wash. From Highway I-5 from the south: Exit Grand Avenue-Garnet Avenue. Continue north a few blocks and turn left (west) on Garnet until Lamont Street. Turn right and proceed north. Lamont will change into Soledad Road. After you pass Loring Street, the entrance to Kate Sessions Memorial Park will be on your right. Turn into the park and proceed to the second parking lot. I will have signs out. From the north: Exit Garnet Avenue-Balboa Avenue, proceed south and turn right (west) on Garnet, following the directions above. From the second parking lot, the views are stupendous. San Diego, Mission Bay, and even the ocean is spread below in a panorama. For those who are not fans of far-off views, there will be, I am sure, groups of families enjoying picnics, rare and lovely plantings (Kate Sessions was a famous horticulturist), and rolling hills for you to paint.
