Dr. David Gale (1915 – 1980) of the New Mexico Watercolor Society was the driving force behind the creation of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies in 1965.

Today the 11 member societies, all west of the Mississippi River, come together for the yearly Exhibition. The New Mexico Watercolor Society has the honor of presenting, in May 2011, the 36th Annual WFWS Exhibition. Juror for the 2011 exhibition is Dale Laitinen. WFWS 35 Congratulations to the 18 SDWS members whose work was selected by Juror Carla O'Connor for inclusion in WFWS 35: Patricia Allen, Denise Athanas, Angela Chang, Judi Coffey, Sharon Feingold, Vi Gassman, Stan Goudey, Helen Hayes, Rolf Lygren, Ananta Mandal, Kathy McChesney, Chuck McPherson, Carol McSweeny, Marion Mettler, Jackie Myers, Mark Smith, Gregg Stone and Htun Tin. Signature status (4 acceptances) was achieved by Stan Goudey, Jackie Myers and Gregg Stone.
