Sue Archer NWS, AWS, TWSA, FWS

SUE ARCHER NWS AWS TWSA FWS Sue became involved with watercolors in 1980 after a 15 year career in Physical Education and coaching. When she moved to Florida in 1979, she had the time and opportunity to take up watercolor painting as a hobby. The hobby became a full time career. The artist enjoys meeting the people buying her work, so instead of showing through galleries, she sells her original watercolors at outdoor juried shows in Florida, doing approximately 9 shows a year. She also teaches painting privately and spends 6 weeks a year teaching watercolor workshops. Sue combines her enjoyment of the intricate process of drawing with the wet on wet approach to watercolors. Most of her work is representational with a strong emphasis on color and design by simplifying a subject's light and shadow patterns. Using a close-up view, she accentuates the dynamic interplay of positive and negative space. Some of her present work explores the simplifying of the shapes of fruit, vegetables, and common place objects and a new direction of figures in the environment may be her next challenge.

About this Workshop:

A course designed to inspire your creativity by using wet into wet techniques, color theory and design concepts. In this workshop you will experience how I create and design my imagery and achieve the quality of light. You will be introduced to many topics and concepts and your goal should be to decide how these ideas could apply to your painting, your subject matter, intent and style. Topics discussed: pigment qualities, saving whites, showing light, linkage, achieving colorful darks Concepts covered: importance of value and good shapes, basic color theory, viewpoint, cropping, designing with white, composition & design, intent, taking and using photographs as reference (number of the topics and concepts covered depends on level of students and time restraints) Although finished paintings are not our objective, there will be a different a painting lesson and/or design project each day. (Lessons chosen will depend on the level of the students and the time available.) For advanced painters: to assist me in discussing your work, you should bring works in progress, the reference material you work from and slides or photos of your work. We might be able to set up a large still-life to work from. But, I encourage everyone to bring your own personal resource material in any subject and form you desire!!!! We will be discussing light, so make sure your reference has direct light on your subject. This way, you will have available the imagery and subject matter you like for solving the daily projects. We will not be painting outside as a class, although you may paint outside if you wish.
