Over the years, I have gotten much pleasure from sketching, printmaking, and painting. I was a childhood artist, along with my sisters. As I grew, my art habit competed with being a student, a mother, a teacher, and a middle school principal. Even so, I filled my sketchbooks with the places I visited, people I knew, scenes from the schools where I worked, and most importantly, my children and husband. Now that I have more time, I have branched out into urban sketching and plein air painting, which has led to developing preferences for the materials I use and the scenes I paint. I mainly use gouache on a black surface and paint scenes that feature contrast, shapes, and color. I apply gouache with strong brushstrokes, float color across parts of the painting, and allow line to be revealed as I paint. Although I like a subject matter that tells a story, I almost always abstract the subject by simplifying its shapes and color.
