Watermedia Workshop with Alison Watt Abstracting Landscape with Collage

In this workshop we will work with mixed media, and experimental techniques and tools to create complex surfaces and collage papers.

We will use a variety of materials (inks, oil pastel, watercolour, pencil crayon, coloured marker...)

We will explore unusual tools for paint application and mark making (cards, brayers, Squeegies, combs, feathers, twigs, textural materials) as well as techniques such as resist and monoprinting.

Day 1. Collage Landscapes: working from your landscape photos, we will work on two pieces of drawing paper, using a variety of mark making tools, to capture the gesture, texture and colour of your landscapes. We will tear up one of these into fragments which we will rearrange on a third paper to create a collage landscape.

Day 2. Painting: We will introduce some acrylic or gouache paint to simplify connect and paint out elements our collage landscapes. We will paint a landscape based on the collage landscape.

Day 3. Integrating the techniques: will explore more experimental techniques, working with water media, inks, paint, resist and mark making to integrate the ideas from Day 1 and 2 into a larger finished piece of a photo referenced or imaginary landscape.

I live on the Salish Sea, the island rich waterway that lies between Vancouver Island and the mainland coast of British Columbia.

My paintings … landscapes, abstractions, illustrated journals.

In acrylic & mixed media I strive for complex surface and luminous colour. In watercolour, transparency and a balance between release and control.

The Covid-19 pandemic had us all reaching for close and absorbing pursuits. It was a reminder of how creative work can sustain us.

A painting practice isn’t just about building skills to make good work. Whether we have a studio or work at our kitchen table, art is there to offer us solace, immersion, the challenge of new subjects, new materials. And connection. In making art we instantly connect to the body of art through time and to other living artists.

In my online classes I want to help you both learn to paint and to create your own nurturing painting practice. With a supportive, playful approach I’ll help you wade into art for the first time or return after years of other work which has kept you from painting. Drawing and painting, like any other skills, can be learned and built upon, and each step along the way can be fun and rewarding. Many of my students return year after year and have become accomplished artists in their own rights.
