Learn a watercolor sketching method to quickly capture the value pattern of sunlight and shadow in outdoor subjects – any subject that casts a shadow. The technique is equally effective with buildings & parts thereof, garden flower subjects, portraits, animals at the zoo and so on. First, The Pattern Sketch skill will be presented in an easy to follow 1-2-3 step procedure that gets powerful results – you can quickly see if you have a composition that will lend itself to an exciting painting. We will work from photos but pattern sketching can easily be applied during paint-outs on location. Additionally, small, quick sketches will help us explore and improve design decisions. Gain experience in planning within formats that are proportionate to the intended painting format.

With a strong pattern sketch, the painter can take advantage of the spontaneous qualities of the watercolor media and have fun with truly personal color effects. The one day format will allow for full color interpretations of some of our best monochromatic pattern sketches from the morning half. Plan sketches are an integral part of the creative process for many successful painters - from art history (Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, to name a few) and on to the powerful contemporary watercolor artists (and workshop teachers), such as Arne Westerman, Tony Couch, Skip Lawrence, Tony Van Hasselt, Jan Kunz, Ron Ranson, Frank Francese, and countless others.
