Joanne Newman, an artist and resident of Point Loma, San Diego, California, has won the Best of Miniatures award in the continuingly competitive January 2022 San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) Member’s exhibition “The New Purple is Black”, an in-gallery show of the SDWS at 2825 Dewey Road in Liberty Station, San Diego, CA. Newman’s painting entitled “Retro Red” was selected by prominent local artist and juror Linda Doll for this honor, out of 220 entries. Doll said of the painting, “The feeling, the color harmony and the design, are extremely appealing to me. The large, middle and small shapes and the way they are integrated appeals to me as well. I look at it and it makes me smile.”
Art has always been a big part of Joanne’s life. She has an art degree from San Diego State University and has worked for a leading-edge international textile company for over 30 years. Currently, most of her paintings are landscapes, although she has painted other subjects and abstract compositions. She is a mixed media artist working on canvas and paper. Her work is frequently selected for SDWS shows. She is a member of Point Loma Artists Association and participates in many of their shows as well.
